EMA präsentiert heute mit „Blood and Chalk“ den vierten Song aus ihrem neuen Album. Er fängt sehr ruhig an, mit Piano und ihrer Stimme, baut sich langsam auf, atmosphärisch, verzerrt, düster, wütend und EMA singt dazu: “I know the rage that’s in me / But I’m just what you made me.”
“Blood and Chalk“ wurde ursprünglich für den #Horror Soundtrack geschrieben.
“I wrote the lyrics very quickly, with the idea that it was about the experience of being a 12 year-old girl, kind of right on the cusp between childhood and starting to grow up. But when I played it for Jake (Portrait) he said he thought it was about a police shooting. I was kind of shocked, but it also makes complete sense from that point of view. Makes me wonder if my subconscious mind was working on a different level, creating a double meaning.”

Nach dem Erfolg von „Past Life Martyred Saints“ (2011) und dem prophetischen „The Future’s Void“ (2014) meldet sich EMA aka Erika M. Anderson mit ihrem neuen Album „Exile In The Outer Ring“ zurück. Das neue Album erscheint am 25.08.2017 und wurde von Jacob Portrait (Unknown Mortal Orchestra) coproduziert und ist EMAs Rückkehr zu ihren Wurzeln in den Noise, zu früheren GOWNS Zeiten. Das 2007er GOWNS Album „Red State“ deutete bereits auf einige der Kernthemen des neuen Albums hin, gemeinsam mit seinem Mix an reduziertem Folk (“Always Bleeds,” ursprünglich ein Gowns Song), Spoken Word (“Where the Darkness Began”) und Noise Epen (“Breathalyzer”).

“I’m excited about this record because it has everything I personally like listening to: fat synth drones, heavy guitar riffs, singsong backing harmonies and narratives about small town leftovers and complex loves; whispered secrets, kids from the void, static turned into melody and layers of crafted feedback,” erklärt EMA. “This is my language, my sonic signature and psychic soundtrack. I’m ripping off the past 10 years of my own work and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results.”
Das Ergebnis ist ein tief persönliches, konfrontatives, aber letztlich erlösendes Album einer Künstlerin in ihrer Höchstform.
